The strawberry production in Southern Europe is currently undergoing a crucial phase. Mild climate characterizes the cultivation areas in Huelva (Spain) as well as Basilicata and Campania (Italy). Temperatures were unusually warm in November and December, but cooler nights occurred towards the end of the year. Precipitation was scarce, but sudden and drastic temperature fluctuations without transitional phases pose a significant challenge.
Conditions for Strawberry Production
Despite the weather caprices, the conditions for strawberry production have been favorable so far. Harvest delays are not expected due to the current weather. However, extreme temperature fluctuations pose a problem, especially for early varieties in Basilicata, which undergo significant stress due to rapidly changing temperatures. The plants automatically activate protective mechanisms, but this affects the growth of plants and flowers, negatively impacting quality and yield.
Another problem is manifesting itself in southern Spain, specifically in the Huelva region, around the Doñana National Park. There is not enough groundwater available for the water-intensive cultivation of strawberries to supply the entire growing area. The effects of this water shortage are diverse: reduced cultivation, dried-up plantations, and lower yield.
A look at the previous season and the current development
However, the cultivation areas are mostly unchanged compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, we are observing slight decreases in quantities. This is partly attributed to the rising trend of “premium strawberries,” which excel in flavor but yield less than traditional varieties.
Currently, there are no particular anomalies in quantities, but the effects of weather-related fluctuations are challenging to predict. The quality at the beginning of the season seems to be good, although there may be slight durability issues. The upcoming weeks will be crucial in accurately assessing the impact of weather on the harvest.
Challenges in production and their impact on the future
Despite the predominantly positive current production trends, the problems from past seasons persist. The climatic challenges in the production areas have a significant impact on strawberry cultivation. Plants are particularly sensitive to weather extremes such as cold, temperature fluctuations, and insufficient rainfall. These uncertainties in planning, coupled with the high labor requirements during harvest, significantly increase production risks. We anticipate that in the medium term, the strawberry cultivation areas in these regions could decrease.
